چکیده

The involvement of different subregions of the striatum in place and response learning was examined using a T-maze. Rats were given NMDA lesions of the dorsolateral striatum (DLS), anterior dorsomedial striatum (ADMS), posterior dorsomedial striatum (PDMS), or sham surgery. They were then trained to retrieve food from the west arm of the maze, starting from the south arm, by turning left at the choice point. After 7 d of training, with four trials a day, a probe test was given in which the starting arm is inserted as the north arm, at the opposite side of the maze. A left turn would indicate a "response" strategy; a right turn, a "place" strategy. The rats were then trained for 7 more days, followed by a second probe test. Unlike rats in the other groups, most of the rats in the PDMS group turned left, using the response strategy on both probe tests. These results suggest that the PDMS plays a role in spatially guided behavior.

Estradiol alters Fos-immunoreactivity in the hippocampus and dorsal striatum during place and response learning in middle-aged but not young adult female rats.

Evidence from lesion and inactivation studies suggests that the hippocampus (HPC) and dorsal striatum compete for control over navigation behavior, and there is some evidence in males that the structure with greater relative activation controls behavior. Estradiol has been shown to enhance HPC-dependent place learning and impair dorsal striatum-dependent response learning in female rats, possib...

Evidence for multiple sites within rat ventral striatum mediating cocaine-conditioned place preference and locomotor activation.

Considerable evidence suggests that psychostimulants can exert rewarding and locomotor-stimulating effects via increased dopamine transmission in the ventral striatum. However, the relative contributions of ventral striatal subregions to each of these effects have been little investigated. In the present study, we examined the contribution of different ventral striatal sites to the rewarding an...

Many hats: intratrial and reward level-dependent BOLD activity in the striatum and premotor cortex.

Human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies, as well as lesion, drug, and single-cell recording studies in animals, suggest that the striatum plays a key role in associating sensory events with rewarding actions, both by facilitating reward processing and prediction (i.e., reinforcement learning) and by biasing and later updating action selection. Previous human neuroimaging rese...

Striatal CREB Phosphorylation Following Cued/Response Learning in the Water Maze Differ in Two Inbred Strains of Mice

Much evidence shows that the hippocampus and striatum play roles as important neural substrates for spatial/place and cued/response learning, respectively. This experiment was conducted to investigate the engagement of the striatum in cued/response learning. The engagement of the striatum was assessed after either place or cue training by determining levels of cAMP response element-binding prot...

Striatal versus hippocampal representations during win-stay maze performance.

The striatum and hippocampus are widely held to be components of distinct memory systems that can guide competing behavioral strategies. However, some electrophysiological studies have suggested that neurons in both structures encode spatial information and may therefore make similar contributions to behavior. In rats well trained to perform a win-stay radial maze task, we recorded simultaneous...
